Thomas de Zengotita describes the impossibility of being authentic in the sense that the concept was understood two generations ago. His book mediated addresses the effect of media on the identity of the self, always being represented through media, and in this quote he presents the paradox of authenticity that has evolved through that development. The idea of authenticity, he says, has to be recalibrated. It is no longer about being the self, but is now about becoming the self and being as honest and integer as possible about that process.
